Listen to Sermon: The Leadership Style of Jesus - At Work Â
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17 (NIV)
When you think of a leader who comes to mind?
When you think of a leader at work who or what comes to mind?
Turn to someone next to you and share your thoughts.
Leadership At Work
- Leadership is about INFLUENCE.
- Leadership is living out every area of our lives with INTEGRITY.
- Leadership is having the ABILITY TO NOTICE the opportunities around us.
KEY THOUGHT:
Leadership in the workplace is all about influencing those we come in contact with by living lives of integrity and learning to notice the opportunities we have to model and share the acceptance, healing and hope of Jesus.
Who are THOSE?
Jesus said in Matthew 5:43-44 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,”
Why the shepherd?
“As you have sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” John 17:18-21 (NIV)
So how do we lead (shepherd) others in our place of work?
a. Check your attitude.
How do you feel about work- specifically the people you work with? Do you have compassion for them like a shepherd does for his sheep?
“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death- even death on a cross.”Philippians 2:5-8
What is your attitude like- what needs to change?
b. Identify and get to know those with whom you have influence.
It’s about relationship. Relationship requires time, attention, listening and looking past differences and hurt. Make an effort to get to know them- take the first step.
c. Make sure that your walk and your talk model the life of Christ.
What do others see when they watch me, follow me at work?
d. Pay attention. Notice the opportunities that present themselves.
“My whole life I have been complaining that my work was constantly interrupted, until I discovered the interruptions were my work.” Henri Nouwen
What changes, what adjustments do you need to make for this to happen?
