Who Lives Next Door?

Spring Cleaning - Part 4
Pastor Ryan Brown

Podcast Listen to Sermon: Who Lives Next Door?

The Church is about three things: worship, well-being and witness. But most churches are preoccupied with worship and well-being. Probably 90-95% of its time, energy, money and resources is spent on worship and well-being. So there’s an imbalance.  J. John (International Evangelist)

29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”  Luke 10:29-37 (NIV)

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”    Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)

Can you identify at least 5 of your immediate neighbors and write down three things you know about each of them? (Take two minutes and try)

Why do we struggle with knowing our neighbors?

Jesus knew how to CREATE SPACE, UNLOCK RELATIONSHIP, meet SIMPLE NEEDS, and was always prepared to walk through OPEN DOORS.

Samaritan Woman (John 4)
Two Blind Men (Matthew 20:29-34)
Rich Young Man (Mark 10:17-23)

Getting to know your neighbor.

  • Create space for them.
  • Unlock relationships by asking questions.
  • Look for ways to meet simple needs.
  • Be prepared to walk through open doors.

Imagine

Podcast Listen to Sermon: Imagine [7Mb]

I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.
This is our hope.
Martin Luther King Jr.

TRUTH: God is a DREAM GIVER and wants to see the dreams He has given us REALIZED.

PROBLEM: Most dreams stay in the realm of the IMAGINATION and are never PURSUED.

Causes: Fear, Sin, Lack of Trust, Self centeredness, Doubt

6 Now the men of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me. 7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions, 8 but my brothers who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt with fear. I, however, followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly. 9 So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.’ 10 “Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the desert. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! 11 I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.” 13 Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance. 14 So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly. 15 (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba after Arba, who was the greatest man among the Anakites.) Then the land had rest from war.  Joshua 14:6-15 (NIV)

What does it take to move from the realm of IMAGINATION to the realm of REALITY?

  1. A realization that God can not be limited by our finite view of ourselves and Him.
  2. Commitment to Jesus Christ and living our lives as His followers.
  3. Being filled by the Holy Spirit and living our lives surrendered to Him.
  4. A Determination to conquer new land regardless of the obstacles and seeming roadblocks.
  5. A unified and committed community.

What about ME?

  • Am I limiting God and His ability to work through me?
  • Have I made a decision to follow Jesus and live my life for Him?
  • Have I asked the Holy Spirit to fill me completely and surrendered my life to His control?
  • Am I determined to do whatever it takes to conquer new land for God?
  • Am I connected, committed and engaged with my brothers and sisters at NLC?

Less is More

Spring Cleaning - Part 2
Pastor Ryan Brown

Podcast Listen to Sermon: Spring Cleaning - Less is More [14Mb]

23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.  Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV)

Clutter: anything that keeps us from being all we can be. Anything that distracts, creates detours in our lives, gets in our way, and makes our lives unnecessarily complicated. Clutter has the potential to leave us feeling out of control and victimized.
TYPES OF CLUTTER…

CLUTTER AREAS…

Our PHYSICAL spaces.

Our MIND.

Our HEART.

19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.  Galatians 5:19-21 (NIV)

What is cluttering up your life?

1———————————————————————–10
NO CLUTTER     WADING THROUGH IT

TWO BIG REASONS FOR CLUTTER?
We trade our long term INHERITANCE for short term EXPERIENCE.

Genesis 25:19-34

We’ve lost the value of SIMPLICITY.

Are you dealing with clutter?
Have you traded God’s best for short term pleasure?
Would your friends and family agree that you value simplicity?
